How to print a large word search clearly

1. Choose the puzzle setting first

Open a permanent puzzle page and choose Large or Extra large before selecting Print. Large normally keeps a 14 × 14 or 16 × 16 puzzle comfortably on one page. Extra large increases the cell and letter size and may need more of the printable area.

Use High contrast when you want a plain black-on-white grid with stronger boundaries. This can also produce a cleaner result on monochrome printers. The setting changes the puzzle presentation; it does not change the hidden words or their locations.

2. Match the paper in the browser and printer

In the browser print dialog, select the paper actually loaded in the printer: A4 in many countries or US Letter where that is standard. A mismatch can clip the final row, move the word list, or create an unnecessary second page.

Start at 100% scale. Disable browser headers and footers if you do not want the page URL and date around the activity. Keep default margins for the first test because many home printers cannot print to the physical edge of the sheet.

3. Print one test copy

Check the paper itself, not only the preview. Confirm that every grid row is visible, the word list is complete, letters are comfortably distinct, and there is enough space to circle or mark an answer. View the sheet under the lighting where it will be used.

If the grid is clipped, return to the webpage and choose Large, or reduce the print scale by a small amount. If the page feels cramped, try Extra large with narrower—but still printable—margins. Avoid aggressive “fit to page” settings that make the final text smaller than expected.

4. Handle answers separately

Print puzzle produces the unsolved activity. Print with answers adds a separate solution page, which is useful for a facilitator, teacher, or later self-check. When preparing a group set, print the required number of blank copies and only the number of answer sheets genuinely needed.

5. Save a PDF when useful

Most desktop browsers offer Save as PDF in the print destination menu. Check the resulting PDF once before distributing it, because it preserves the browser's selected paper, margin, and scale settings. Do not publish a personalised puzzle containing names or private lesson information unless the people involved have agreed.

Quick troubleshooting

• Last row missing: confirm the paper size, use Large, or reduce scale slightly.
• Unexpected second page: remove browser headers and footers and return margins to a standard setting.
• Letters too small: choose Extra large on the webpage instead of enlarging a screenshot.
• Background looks grey: use High contrast and print in monochrome.
• Controls appear on paper: print from the puzzle page's Print button, not a screenshot of the webpage.
