How the ClearSearch General English Word List is sourced, filtered, licensed, and described.

The Word Unscrambler uses a generated list derived from the SCOWL / English Speller Database maintained by Kevin Atkinson. The pinned upstream release is rel-2026.02.25, commit 7e99edab8e32f9f9ea2b15f249ca8d4d67237410.

License

SCOWL permits use, copying, modification, distribution, and sale of the database and generated word lists without a fee, provided its copyright and permission notices are retained. ClearSearch preserves the complete upstream notice with the deployed project.

ClearSearch filters

  • American and shared English spellings through SCOWL size 70
  • Standard variant level 1
  • Abbreviations and special categories excluded
  • SCOWL’s default nosuggest safety groups excluded
  • Lowercase ASCII words containing 2–15 letters retained
  • Duplicates removed and output sorted deterministically

The generated list contains 122,914 entries and was prepared on August 1, 2026.

Not an official game dictionary

The list is a general-English spelling resource. ClearSearch does not claim that every result is accepted by a particular board game, tournament, dictionary, or publisher, and it is not affiliated with those organizations.
